{"id":5877,"date":"2020-11-15T18:38:38","date_gmt":"2020-11-15T18:38:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/really.zonky.org\/?p=5877"},"modified":"2020-11-15T18:38:40","modified_gmt":"2020-11-15T18:38:40","slug":"eu-it-was-always-about-political-integration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/really.zonky.org\/?p=5877","title":{"rendered":"EU: It Was Always About Political Integration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There&#8217;s a myth propagated by the far-right anti-EU brigade &#8211; that the &#8220;original&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Economic_Community\">European Economic Community<\/a> (there was an earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Coal_and_Steel_Community\">ECSC<\/a>) was only ever about a single market for goods and services. As can be seen from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schuman_Declaration\">Schuman Declaration<\/a>, the long-term aim was <em>always<\/em> political integration :-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>A&nbsp;united Europe was not achieved and we had war.<\/p><p>Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity. The coming together of the nations of Europe requires the elimination of the age-old opposition of France and Germany. Any action taken must in the first place concern these two countries.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you could argue that a unified Europe is undesirable and that it is perfectly reasonable to stop at a single market.
